SOLAS Update from USA Cargo
13 June 2016
The GFG export member for Georgia, USA provides an updated view on Container Weight Verification…
|National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association Creates Repository of SOLAS Information
As the July 1 effective date approaches, it may become important to know how each of the ocean carriers want to receive their VGM information. As we told you last week, some but not nearly all lines have issued this information, but it will certainly be helpful to know that there is one source you can go to for all the information that is out there. In any case, we at USA Cargo Services will be available to help you find and interpret the information you need.
|The new SOLAS VGM (Verified Gross Mass) rules will take effect on July 1. To facilitate the transition, the NCBFAA has created a public repository of SOLAS notices and tariff publications from many of the ocean carriers and marine terminal operators. These notices explain the VGM communication process they will require or accept as well as the amount of any charges for receiving the VGM certifications from shippers and NVOCCs or for weighing containers in those cases where the Marine Terminal Operator (MTO) is agreeing to provide that service. Keep in mind that there may be many MTOs, owned and operated separately, serving one port of loading.
The NCBFAA has made public its SOLAS/VGM information accumulated to date and shippers may access it at SOLAS information on the NCBFAA website, www.ncbfaa.org.
PLEASE REMEMBER, however, that this information is posted without any representation that it is timely, accurate or complete. The NCBFAA is only able to post whatever information it receives so that it is possible that the carriers, vendors, logistics companies, or ports will have more current information. Accordingly, each member will need to separately verify that the posted information is both timely and accurate by checking with the various ocean carriers and MTOs with whom they are dealing.
P.S. It’s not the first time our Atlanta members have featured in the GFG news, to see more… “Georgia is Logistics Sweet Spot” and “United in giving thanks“, not to mention the articles about their acquisition of Global Freight Services and subsequent business successes.
